Is E-Mail marketing really that successful?

The Internet is the number one advertising medium and E-mail marketing is the easiest way to develop customer retention and drive your sales up.

Advertising is changing….

The evidence is everywhere! The nature and effectiveness of marketing through the Internet is making itself clear in the loss of our news papers and other syndications. I recently picked up a News Week magazine and couldn’t believe how thin it was. Other major magazines are shrinking too. Why? People are getting their information online and are getting their advertisement online as well. Online advertisers are picking up the business that is being lost in the news print and hard copy advertisement space.

Obviously, there is tremendous growth in online advertisement. So, what are the primary ways to market VIA the Internet?

  1. Own your Web Site

Having your own business Web Site is no longer even an option. The perception alone (how your customers perceive your company) should be persuasive enough for you to have a Web Site. Not to mention that more people search the Internet for business by far than who reach for yellow pages or call for information. Bottom line: if you don’t have a Web Site, you are not being found at all by a very large majority of potential customers.

  1. Through Paid clicks and advertisement programs

Google, MSN , Yahoo and most of the major search engines offer paid advertisement on their search results. This is where you can pay to have your “add” shown at the top area of the page when certain search phrases are used for searches. Most companies today allocate at least some of their marketing budget towards Paid advertisements like these. Although they prefer to be found organically, (which is basically being at the top of the results without paying the search engine for the results) companies will often do both (get top rankings and pay for impressions through paid search engine “impressions”.

In addition, there are scores of companies that offer advertising on their Sites. Many of these are industry specific and promise to promote your business directly to the market you are in. And often, they will provide a link to your site from theirs for a fee. There are many other areas that one could be spending money on the Internet to advertise on and most all of them are designed to drive traffic to your own Web Site. So what else is there?

  1. E-mail marketing

By capturing E-mail addresses from your Web Site, you can market directly to E-mail subscribers who have expressed interest in your products or services VIA E-mail.

E-mail marketing is ingenious by its very nature. It is fast, direct and compared to every other advertising medium that exists, very inexpensive. Let me lay out my case for the claim of being inexpensive.

Let’s say you want to reach 5,000 people with a post card.

Your cost would look something like this:

1. Design and lay out for art work $200

2. Cost of the printing of the cards (I will use a 4×5 card cost .69 each.=$3,450

3. Cost of mailing the 5,000 post cards @ .45 each =$2,250

Total to reach out to 5,000 people with a post card advertisement = $5,900

Newspaper Advertisement….

Since newspaper costs vary a great deal, let’s go with a low cost that I recently heard for a small town paper for a 3×5 add running twice a week for a month (total of eight adds) without any particular preferential placement. The newspaper enjoys a daily subscription of about 22,000 subscribers.

Monthly cost for a single color 3×5 add to run eight days: $1,360

Now, at first glance, one might think that you had an opportunity to reach all of the readers of the newspaper but all of the readers would not be looking for your kind of product even if they saw the add. This is how the Internet is better when it comes to target markets and direct marketing. First of all, if a person comes to your Web Site, it is highly likely that they are searching for your product. Secondly, if they sign up to your E-marketing database, they are definitely interested in your products.
